The King of Pop Has Died!!

It is with great sadness, that I write this. According to the Los Angeles Times and the news agency Associated Press, Michael Jackson has died at age 50.

Michael was rushed to L A Medical Center and suffered a cardiac arrest.

May our beloved "King of Pop", rest in peace........

1) On June 25th, in as many countries as we can possibly organize, we will protest in front of the respective Venezuelan embassies or consulates, or in front of international organizations connected with the issue of Human Rights.

2)The protest consists of gagging our mouths with red muzzles as a symbol of violations of freedom of expression.

3) During the manifestation a document, rejecting the closure of Globovision and of any media in the world, will be presented

AN UNMUZZLED WORLD JUNE 25th: WORLD WIDE PROTESTS FOR THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Freedom of speech is established as a fundamental human right and in a system of democratic government it ought to be promoted and defended by the government as well as by and the citizenry.

Unmuzzled we speak!In Venezuela freedom of speech and democracy have been in danger for quite some time. The most obvious attack was the closing of RCTV, a television channel that had been operating for 50 years.

Their license was revoked and its equipment stolen outright under the sad excuse that its concession had expired.Once again, Venezuelans are being threatened with the closing of Globovisión, the only 24 hour news channel in the country.

This might happen any moment! There is no valid legal explanation; it is a political fact that the powers-that-be simply want to silence the channel whose opinions are not the same as those of the government. Should the closing of this communication medium materialize, then the only television window left in Venezuela for denouncing human rights violations would be closed off.

We want to raise our voices against the closure of any media anywhere in the world. We want you to be part of this campaign and to play a role in this manifestation that shall allow our voices to be heard everywhere without Muzzles!

Remembering the Tiananmen Square Massacre

Twenty years ago, the people of China tired of not having their voices heard, flooded the streets in protest against China's Communist Regime. The response was unthinkable as thousands of brave man and women were murdered without mercy, by the Chinese army.

One lone man stood in front of the tanks, putting his life in danger for the sake of freedom. His identity is not known and he has earned the name of "Tank Man". A symbol of freedom forever immortalized. The photograph was taken by Jeff Widener, a photographer from the Associated Press, from the sixth floor of the Bijing Hotel, at a distance of 800 meters and through a 400 mm lence.

Other famous participants of the event in 1989:

Wang Dan, Wei Jingsheng, Wuerkaixi, Chai Ling. Student leaders of the protests.
Zhao Ziyang, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China
Li Peng, former Premier of the Communist Party of China
Wen Jiabao, current Premier of the Communist Party of China
Liu Xiaobo, famous Chinese dissident
Yu Dongyue, former Chinese journalist who threw paint-filled eggs onto the Mao Zedong portrait on the Square
Bei Dao, poet (ideological influence, during the protests was participating at a conference in Berlin)
Cui Jian, the so-called "father of Chinese rock," whose song "Nothing To My Name" was considered an unofficial "anthem" for students and protesters there.

If there is anything to learn from so much bloodshed and injustice is that it showed the world the true face of communism. The "Great Farce", once again showed it's evil nature for the whole world to see.

No More Shows Until September

Well this is it until September. Today I picked up my paintings from the Pomona Valley Art Association. I was pleasantly surprised with a little award.

It was a very beautiful show this year. It just keeps getting better every year and I look forward to next year's competition.

Name Chosen for my Dog! Mi Perrita Tiene Nombre

I want to thank everyone who had name suggestions for my new dog. After careful consideration I picked one of the names suggested by my neighbor Rocio, who came up with Gigi and Havana.

Her name will be "Havana". One because she answers to it and second, because she looks so much like the fluffy little dogs, "The Havanese or Bichon, I remember from back in Havana.

Muchas gracias a todos los que sugirieron nombres para mi perrita. Después de cuidadosa consideración, he decidido ponerle uno de los nombres sugeridos por mi vecina, Roció, quien pensó en Gigi y Havana.

La perrita se llamara "Havana". Primero porque responde a dicho nombre y segundo por que se parece mucho a los perritos peludos, "Bichon Habanero", que recuerdo se veían en la Havana.

I have just added a new beautiful female dog to our family. I just love her!!!

Don't you just adore those big black eyes and that shiny wet nose?. I finally have a companion to walk with, in the mornings!!

I don't have a name for her yet, so if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.

Hoy agregue esta preciosa perrita a nuestra familia. La adoro!!

Que tal les parecen sus ojos negros y su brillante nariz mojada? Finalmente tendré compañera, para mis caminatas por las mañanas!!

Inspiration From my Kids

These two cartoons were inspired by my two youngest daughters. Zury was just like the first cartoon. She sucked her thumb until she was nine and as a toddler she walked around dragging her little blanket and wearing my slippers. She was always quiet and just stared everybody down.

Zibelle on the other hand, was a fireball. She was like the Tasmanian devil. After a nap she would wake up with this little grin on her forehead, that looked like two little horns. ;D

My oldest James I drew many times as he was growing up.

Then there is Mickie, the youngest who I turned into Cupid at six months old.

First Art Show of the Year!

Well, it's that time of the year again. The first art show of the year is here and I'm ready. My application is turned in and I deliver on Wednesday the 25th of February.

It is the annual juried show at the Chaffey Community Art Association. Their gallery is located inside the historic Fillipie Winery in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The shows opening reception is on March 8, from 1-4 p.m.

The association is made up of a great group of artists including Martha Underwood, who is one of my old professors and until his death a few months ago, the great Milford Zornes, whom I took a picture with just a month before his death, and I just love participating with all of them. I've never won any awards there, but then I'm at times competing with my old professors, so I don't feel bad at all. I'm after all, just a guppy in a great big pond of accomplished artists, but I love their shows.

The CCAA was founded over 60 years ago and has had several homes, including the Ontario Museum of Art, also in California.

The pieces I'm entering are, "The Dancer", "The Boat'', and "Eve". This is the first time, that I'm entering drawings. I have always just entered paintings, but I'm not a bad drawer and thought I'd give it a try. With all the work I have with Mickie it's just easier too sit down and draw-especially during those never ending sleepless nights.

The winery sometimes offers wine tasting during the opening reception and the gallery recently acquired a baby grand piano and now during the reception, a pianist delights us with his/her music. It's just awesome!!!!

Meet my New Baby Chicks

I have this sort of hobby. I raise fancy breeds of chickens. Yesterday I received a brand new shipment of baby chicks. They are now three days old. They were doing fine, but last night three died and another tonight, but it looks like the rest are going to make it.

Chickens are the nicest pet to raise, they are beautiful and relaxing to look at and they give eggs so I don't have to buy any. The babies will look much like the fluffy chickens on the second half of the video.

The funny looking birds at the end are guineas and though wild, since they spend the first two months of their life inside the house, under a heating lamp, they don't run away from home and they actually are very attached to people.

The Harmony Mural

I few days ago I found some old photographs I had taken of a mural I did in 1993, during college. It was a project I was chosen to do, after submitting a proposal.

The day the local Newspaper photographed it and interviewed me, there was an African-American woman sitting at the cafeteria when it was hung and she happened to be studding to be a nurse, just like the one on in the mural, which was a nice coincidence. The girl in the red dress I took out of an image that I used in on of my paintings. The Japanese Ballet dancer was inspired by a girl I met in Dance class. The fighter pilot was a good friends daughter, the suit she is wearing belonged to her stepfather and that same year the first female fighter pilot was announced.

The Native American is a friend of mine (she is Navajo), who agreed to pose for some photographs, and I picked this one, because she looked proud and majestic, much different from the submissive depictions of the past. She came to see the mural before I delivered it to the college and she loved her portrait, so that was very rewarding to me.

I envisioned "Women in Harmony", as a group of women, in a great big room (earth), living in harmony. If only life could imitate art, all the problems on earth would be resolved. It was chosen and I got the materials and worked on it in the living room of my apartment.

I worked mostly from photographs, since I had too little kids by then and it was easier to work at home and I painted mostly at night when they were asleep. On the floor were different symbols depicting religions around the world. I placed painting on the wall of the room, showing a time lime, from ancient times, to the days of the dreadful corsets, to slavery, the beginning of the woman's liberation and finally a blind woman graduating from college. The mural measured 12 feet long by 6 feet high. I wish I had the rest of the photographs, since the mural wasn't quite finished when I took these.

A Rainbow in the Morning

I woke up today to the site of a beautiful rainbow. As I walked out of my bedroom one of my daughters says, "mom, look outside", I thought oh God, what now?, "mom, just look outside now". So I turned around and there it was-the biggest and most beautiful rainbow I have seen in a long time.

I ran in and got the camera, before it disappeared. I videotaped it, but it is a little annoying, because my Ginnies were being really loud and would not quiet down. I'll have to make a video of them another time and also of the chickens.

Rosmy the Cartoon

This is Rosmy. I created this character 30 years ago as a sort of therapy to cope with how much I missed my friends in Cuba in particular my best friend. I named her Rosmy as a way to keep her memory alive. I was thirteen years old when I created the original drawing. I will post it when I find it.

I got busy with life and forgot about her for about 15 years, then I decided to start drawing her cartoon again, so I showed it to my brother, who by then was very Americanized and he said, "You do realize she is not wearing a top"?. To which I said, "So".......then I thought for a moment and realized I was very much a 100% Cuban when I drew her for the first time. I remember that back in the island it was common to see little girls walking around at the beach with no top, though my mom doesn't remember that, I do.

Anyways I modified her and put some clothes on her after that. I also draw her mom and a boy version I named Fifi, after a boy a had a crush on, when I was in fifth grade, back in Cuba. I'll be posting these cartoons in the future, just for fun.

New Painting "The Departure"

This is the latest painting I've been working on. It's not quite finished, but I've already named it, "The Departure".

I'm painting from a photograph I took of my youngest son Mickie, before his diagnosis of Autism. I think it's for my own therapy, not that any amount of therapy could ever heal my heart. I can't get over something that is never going to change.

The day I took this photograph, we were visiting Lake Elsinore, in California and Mickie started walking and never looked back, so I let him walk, just to see if he would ever stop. He walked away until he looked really small and I had to run after him. He was 1 1/2 years old.

When I'm finished, I'll post the Painting.

This past October I participated in my last show of the year, at the Pomona Valley Art Association at the Soho Gallery Underground in Pomona, California. I was pleasantly surprise with the news that one of my paintings, "El Farol" had won the popular award. My official website is at ArtDeZurama

What a nice way to reach the end of the year. Now, no more shows until next year in March. I can't wait till then! It's at those shows that I can be just another artist among other artists and I can forget about autism for 1 or 2 hours. I do wish Mickie would enjoy going with me, but he can't stand big crowds of people and I don't want to cause him anymore stress.

I thought it would be fun to make a video of the drawing process. A few months ago I got into figure drawing and I just could not do anything else. This happens every year. I will get tired of a particular medium or subject and I will get into another, until I get tired of it too. Looking back now, I'm glad I made this videos, because right after I uploaded them to Blogger and to Youtube, my computer crashed and all my images were wiped out.
